About Marys Peak Natural Scenic Area

Marys Peak Natural Scenic Area, located within the Willamette National Forest in western Oregon, is centered on Marys Peak, the tallest mountain in the Oregon Coast Range at 4,097 feet. The area covers a mix of dense coniferous forests, lush meadows, and alpine-like habitats that support a variety of plant and animal species. It is a critical habitat for species such as the northern spotted owl and several migratory birds. The peak offers sweeping 360-degree views that include the Cascade Mountains to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and on clear days, distant views of Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens. Historically, Marys Peak was significant to indigenous tribes including the Kalapuya and Siuslaw peoples, who utilized the area’s rich natural resources. Today, it is a popular outdoor recreation destination providing hiking, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, and scenic driving on its paved summit road. The summit area also contains interpretive information, a picnic area, and a snow play zone in winter months. The Marys Peak trail system offers several well-maintained routes with varying difficulty levels, leading through wildflower meadows, old-growth forest patches, and viewpoints. Visitors appreciate the quiet, less crowded environment compared to other Oregon peaks, making it a favored spot for photographers, birdwatchers, and families. The area's protected status helps preserve its ecological integrity while supporting low-impact public enjoyment.
